When a member steps forward to serve on the Executive Board of their local union, they take on a vital role that shapes the future of the entire community. Leadership in this position is not just about holding a title; it is about actively working to improve conditions, build trust, and create opportunities for every member. If elected to the board, I would focus on four key areas that will strengthen our union and make it more responsive to the needs of all members. These pillars are developing our channels of communication, encouraging active member engagement, advocacy for fair working conditions, and building stronger relationships with other locals within our labour councils.
Each of these areas plays a crucial role in building a union that listens, acts, and grows together.
Below, I explain how, as an Executive Board member, I'll work to advance these goals and why they matter for our collective success.

We need a union that will actually listen to the membership.
Developing Clear and Open Communication
One of the biggest challenges that our union faces is keeping our members informed and involved. Without clear communication, members can feel disconnected or unsure about what the union is doing on their behalf. If elected, I would prioritize establishing reliable channels for sharing information and gathering feedback.
How this would work:
Regular updates: I would push for better messaging with information that is distributed in our monthly newsletter and advocate for members to receive their newsletter online. I would also begin the creation of a database for email correspondence, as well as a database for text alerts. These mediums would summarize key developments made by the elected leadership and our committees, advertise important events, and to remind our members of key dates that are coming up. These updates would also be easy to understand and accessible to all members and sharable through social media when possible.
Two-way communication: It’s not enough to just send information out. I would encourage online Q&A sessions, webinars, QR code suggestion boxes, and open the discussion on digital platforms where members can actually comment on our posts so that they can not only voice concerns, ask questions, and offer ideas but that the union can hear them.
Accessible participation: It’s not fair to expect members to fit rigid meeting times and formats while balancing their family life. I would advocate for flexible and family-friendly ways to participate—such as hybrid meetings for committees, recorded sessions for webinars, childcare support at in-person events, and more online town halls for members to address their concerns. By meeting members where they are at, we ensure that our rank and file members and their families have a real opportunity to engage, share their perspectives, and be part of the decision-making process.
Encouraging Active Member Engagement
A union thrives when its members are active participants, not just passive recipients of decisions. I would work to create more opportunities for members to get involved in union activities and
leadership roles.
Key strategies include:
Workshops and Training: Offering sessions on workers’ rights, how to actively engage members, and member led leadership development to empower members with knowledge and confidence to share onto others.
Getting more with our Committees: Many hands make light work, so it's integral to give the tools for our committees to focus on engagement, retention, education, and leadership development. With so many great members with so many skills, we need to bring them into the fold and give them the tools to elevate our local from a grass roots level.
Clubs and Associations: Bringing together members with shared interest and organizing them into warm informal gatherings can build camaraderie and a sense of belonging. It doesn't matter if it's a sports club, a book club, a code club or chess club by creating a space for members to meet members that share personal interest we can foster a healthier community within our local.
Advocating for Better Working Conditions
At the heart of any union’s mission is the fight for fair treatment and safe workplaces. If elected, I would dedicate myself to pushing for stronger contracts, better benefits, and improved safety standards.
Actions I would take:
Contract negotiations: Work closely with bargaining teams to ensure contracts reflect the real needs of members, including fair wages, reasonable hours, and protections against unfair treatment.
Safety initiatives: Collaborate with employers and safety experts to identify hazards and implement effective solutions, reducing workplace injuries.
Support systems: Establish resources for members facing workplace issues, such as legal advice or counseling services.
Building Relationships Across Labour Councils
In today’s rapidly changing economic landscape, it is more important than ever for labour councils to unite local unions in solidarity. By advocating for collective action and mutual support, we can strengthen our bargaining power and ensure that the rights of workers are upheld across all sectors.
Strategies for Building Solidarity
To advocate for solidarity across labour councils, we can implement several strategies:
Joint Campaigns: Organize campaigns that address common issues faced by workers across different sectors.
Regular Communication: Establish channels for ongoing dialogue and information sharing among councils and to report to their memberships.
Training and Workshops: Provide training sessions that focus on building solidarity and collective action skills.
Solidarity Events: Host events that bring together members from different local unions and councils to foster connections and collaboration.
By voting for me as an Executive Board Member you vote to make a real difference. By developing our communication, active engagement, advocating better working conditions, I would work to build a union that stands united and strong. Together, we can create a community where every member feels heard, supported, and ready to face the challenges ahead.
